Two Blogging Questions: New Blog Host and Links

By Brian from Racedriven

Two Questions about Blogging:

1. I am looking to start a second blog or mirror my current blog and I want to use anyother free blog host, I have tried Wordpress.com (At that time, not must custom HTML work could be done) and currently using Blogger, What are my options?

2. For Blog Links: Link Page or Sidebar? Is it ok to build a seperate Links page for your weblog links instead of putting the links down the left or right side of your weblog on the sidebar?

Discuss..
See Yeah!

Brian,

I'm currently on supersized which is fairly tied down as far as custom HTML goes. But it suits my purposes and it imports from blogger and most other hosts fairly well.

As far as link-roll or links page: are you talking about a static "here are blogs that I read" page/column or a regularly updated "here are some interesting links" page/column. In both cases I prefer the column solution. Do you del.icio.us? you can integrate del.icio.us links into a blog very easily. How do you keep track of the blogs you read? Most RSS readers can export a blogroll. I use bloglines which is web-based to maintain the (too extensive) rolls on my blog.

Ben,

I am talking about building a seperate webpage just for all of my links.

Example: Under Navigation> clicking on Links.

I want to create more sidebar room for a cleaner look or even get rid of the sidebar completely.

I just don't know if its blogging correct.

See Yeah!

Brian,

I recently moved to from Blogger to WordPress, but hosted on my own site. My reasons all resolve to my desire to customize my functionlity. (ex. add categories, specify upload directories, etc.)

Keep in mind that I have my own (free!) copy of Wordpress, so take my advice with a grain of salt. That said, I'm very happy with Wordpress. I don't know how long ago you tried WordPress.com, but the new templates are very flexible, yet intuitive. I'm assuming that Wordpress.com won't let you install obscure plugins, but it looks like Wordpress.com is a test-bed for the new functionality for version 2.1 (Wordpress.com gives you a spell-checker... the only thing that is missing from the v2.0 that I currently miss from Blogger.) It's worth a look at least.

i have to agree that wordpress is the way to go. the software is free. if you host yourself, it's cheap (we are using media temple) and it is very flexible. you can use a variety of free templates, or if you have the skills, you can design your own.

it also has the ability to create links in a separate page. in fact, you can create pages for anything you like. if you look at www.thegarageblog.com there is a separate links page and if you look at the about page, i've put a bio page as well.

Hay everyone,

Thanks for the advice, I have to say that when I was at Wordpress.com, the templates were great, but no JavaScript aloud which took away Google AdSense and my counter.

One other thing, I got 50 hits a day and sometimes well over 200 hits per day at WordPress.com, but now on blogger, I can only get an average of 20 hits per day.

I do think Wordpress software is what I want, but I can't host it myself, so its free hosting, maybe I will try Wordpress.com again or something like it.

BTW: Wordpress.com is a test-bed.

Maybe I will try it again, but with a new name, I can't my old name back.

i find your traffic comments interesting Brian. i know that switching back and forth will affect traffic, but i've had the opposite stats to you.

The Garage hasn't been around as long as racedriven, and was getting about 50 hits a day on blogger. so far at wordpress i'm only up to an average of about 10 and i'm working harder with ping services etc to promote it.

interestingly, our food blog (which is still on blogger) has just gone through a huge increase in traffic due to only 2 recipe carnival submissions. while i love being part of the carnival of cars, i haven't received a single referral from it.
