The Automobilist ??

I received a request for link exchange from a fellow named Andy who said he had a blog called the Automobilist, have any of you? I checked his page, actually tracked it for several days, to see what kind of posts he has and if it was interesting or compatible with my blog. I have links to primarilly automotive blogs on my sidebar, many of the guys who cooperate here are listed there. And I noticed that this page, doesn't have any "Original Content."

Now don't misunderstand me, we all refer to other blogs in our posts, and give Hat Tips to our sources. But nobody that I'm aware of, just function like this fellow. He has your headline and the begining of the post, with a link to the original source site. I for my part, always link and hat tip, and usually give my own spin and comments on the subject. That I had thought was the purpose of a blog like mine.

I have a problem with this and have emailed Andy. While I'm waiting for his response, I was wondering if any of you were aware of his site and that he is reposting your material.
His page is; theautomobilist dot com

Check his page, and let me know what you think. I've seen material from most of your pages, including CarPundit, MPH, Jalopnik and AutoBlog.

Further question, if I ultimately don't want Andy linking or reposting material from my site, how should I handle that? Do I have any avenue for grievance? I know he has a Yahoo e-mail address, but that's all.

I think this is the same as that RSS styled web site we saw a while back. forget what it was called. but it just pulls RSS and has a standard format. I don't mind this one since it doesn't run the stories in full. basically all links to the other sites.

I looked at his site as well, Joe, and am pretty sure I am not going to link to it.

I have nothing personally against this guy (I don't know him at all), but it's just a site of links with no other original content.

That's not something usefull to my readers (heck, everyone's readers).

I have a spanish language blog and just discovered your blog recently, and was guessing about being linked. Maybe it`s not your kind of link target a spanish blog, but would be nice to be linked with autobloggers. Go, take a look and drop me a line (maybe you don`t understand spanish...anyway autobloggers is on links section).

This is my latest test of the situaiton, http://myforddreams.blogspot.com/2006/02/what-do-you-call-it-when.html

I don't even think this guy moderates his reposting.

I'm relatively new to blogging, but i've been spending time in most of the blogs you folks write. what i have noticed is that there are a few people who seem to do this "cut & paste blogging" just for the sake of trying to generate traffic. personally, i don't think it's too cool, not to mention the lack of creativity.
if the guy doesn't respond to your e-mails, can you approach his host?

i work in the car industry & i have a pretty strong opinion (just ask me) so i'm never at a loss for words. i like to create my own content for the most part, or at the very least, give credit when i make comment on someone else's idea.

Marc, amazing, I just got similar information from Dorri over at my blog. I had never heard of this "Splog" thing before.

Does anyone else care about this?
I know that Dave of MPH didn't seem too concerned, but now that it's obvious that this pinhead is doing this for profit, what do you say Dave?

I think, that not only should we not link to it, but at a preagreed time, we should all post about it, so that it will appear on his site. The idiot doesn't even moderate what is posted.

Maybe I seem to be a little over the top on this, but what do you guys think?

Yes I do care, if I didn't care, I wouldn't be search the internet so much on this site.

I have two things:
1. The owner “Andy” of “the automobilist” also owns “the gadgetist“, “the gossipist“, and most likely many more than I and others have found.

2. I have just found another “splog” site and this one has broken all of the rules including full posts and images that are not even on his host, its just everything from the RSS feed and credit to himself.

Check this out, http://www.ostauto.com.

I have had enough, I don't know what to do, but something will be done, I have posted on all of this at racedriven.com, check it out.

See Yeah!

OK, here's a question. What about the you big guys in the blog world? Dave of MPH Online, Dave and Mike of Jalopnik, All the guys at AutoBlog, Mark Tapscott, EL Everson of AutoMuse, Bob from CarsCarsCars! and 4Drivers Only??

Do you not care about this? Is there any recourse for this. Marc who has been very helpful with information over at RaceDriven and Rick who writes RaceDriven have been digging, as has Dorri over at IfIt'sGotanEngine.

It's a shame, that these guys can do this, and none of us smaller guys have the resources, but you guys earn a living from this, isn't there some action you can take?

Hay Big Ford Fan,

Its Brian from Racedriven, first off I am the only one over here at Racedriven and Marc is a blogging friend of mine from Asian Motorsports and Full Throttle.

I am stunned that no one else cares...

Brian, sorry about the mistake, it's just that I've been banging my head against the wall.

Here at home, I'm told not to get all worked up over this, and the consensus of bloggers is that it's no big deal.

I realize I'm just some schmuck at a computer with no real tallent. But I've come to really love what I do with my little blog. It's been the one constant keeping sane through a fucking miserable winter. Sorry about the cursing, but I feel as strongly as you about this. I just don't have enough computer literacy to do anything. I'm goind to try and call this asshole at the phone number you provided. He won't respond to emails.

Maybe I can contact Google? Have his AdSense ads removed???
Maybe I should just forget it.

To tell you the truth, I'm not sure I have it in me to do this any more. I don't see any light at the end of the tunnel. And if Marc is right, could I be liable for slander??

"If IPAddress = whatever, print big letters "this post is stolen""

It's possible, although I haven't looked into how to do it.

Liable to who? Some kid inventing and then selling domain names, using YOUR posts to make it seem like the potential (but unsavvy) buyer is getting something good for their money? HE is the one who would be liable.

In the meantime, cover yourselves by clearly copyrighting what you write.

JWF, how do you copyright what you write? If it costs me substantial money, it's not worth it.

What kills me is this, I'm not a professional, what I write isn't really news, why would anyone want to steal it?

Hell, I'd love to copyright my stuff, if I knew how.
