Holidays, Does anyone care if we post or not?

Do you guys think it is vital to post over the holidays? Traffic boosts from posting new stories seems minimal compared to the work and effort. Especially if you’re a full timer. I’ve always tried to post as much stuff in advance as I can but I also focus on the big traffic days which are usually Monday through Thursday.

Jalopnik doesn’t post much over weekends/holidays but Autoblog does. Do you guys notice?

I think for the average blogger it's not important. In my opinion, with many people visiting family they're not online as much.

Think about it, how much time did you spend online Thursday or Friday?

That said, I think people expect AutoBlog to post everyday, because they have so many people. Where for you Dave or most, it's just one person.

A lot of "smaller" blogs are sporadic, even guys that I respect like AutoProphet or CarPundit, sometimes go days without posting.

But even some of the "larger" players like Joe Sherlock of ViewThroughTheWindshield or Bob from CarsCarsCars! generally don't post on the weekends.

When I started blogging I tried to never miss a day, but life gets in the way.

Me, I missed the updates, but then again, for places like Jalopnik, it's a job more than anything, and I'm sure they need a break from it every now and then.

But the real deal is, blogs mostly feed on events, and in our little corner of the blogosphere, we mostly feed on what the manufacturers are doing..and they don't work weekends. ;)

When you don't have a lot of "news" to cover and still want to keep the site updated on the weekends, one idea is to use the weekends to post your original content, your rants, your articles, etc. It's also a good time to do indepth feedback on something that happened earlier in the week.

For your readers that do read on the holidays/weekends, it's a nice little bonus, some fresh stuff to chew on. For the readers that only surf at work, no problem, that weekend content will be waiting for them when they start slacking on the job Monday, and they'll appreciate it then.

Plus, that original content might be something you can "sit on", saving it for a rainy day when you don't feel like updating, or can't for whatever reason.

But what if you don't have any rainy day content, and you don't feel like posting?

Don't post!

If you're not depending on your blog to pay the bills (and most of us aren't), don't chain yourself to it..that's a great way to start hating it, and probably accounts for the death of thousands of blogs every week.

Just MAKE SURE you let the readers know that you'll be scarce for awhile..otherwise you won't have very many readers when you come back.

Croak raises a good point. Whenever I'm going to be out of town or offline for a few days, I let my readers know.

In the same way, I send an email to business associates saying I'll be out of the office.

I've seen some promissing blogs fall to the side.

I blog weekdays for two reasons:

1. Forbes picked my site as a top 5 car blog but said I don't post often enough... not only did I feel guilty... I was excited as hell that someone was reading the site. I don't get a lot of feedback on the site so, to be honest, I started the site in Dec '03 just to practice my writing.

2. It's good practice. I try to keep to a very strict schedule and it's been working out. I'm not claiming I write pearls of wisdom (far, far from it) but it's a good discipline to have an 11am (ish) deadline everyday. I have to have it posted by 1115am because I have to go get my daughter from nursery school by 1130am :)

I do _try_ to update on Sundays with my Car Review Roundup but the thing takes friggin' hours for me to do and sometimes I just don't have the energy. So, I get bummed when I don't get it done but I don't lose any sleep over it.

Hey Bob, glad to see you here.
I enjoy your blog, pearls of wisdom or not.
